Cosmetic surgery has gained mainstream popularity in recent years with the number of people getting surgery burgeoning. This trend has been popularized by celebrities and television shows like ‘Extreme Makeover” and ‘Botched.’ A lot of plastic surgeon practices are also advertising their services on infomercial ads.
This trend has resulted in more and more people seeking consultation on these procedures from plastic surgeons on utsouthwestern.edu, which costs a lot of money. This is the main reason why two doctors, Dr. Craig Abramowitz and Dr. Gary Breslow came together and started an online site called Zwivel. Zwivel is an efficient medium that connects doctors with potential patients looking for plastic surgery.
The site allows patients to find out the credentials of different doctors before agreeing to a free consultation with them. Zwivel has so far registered around 1,400 doctors and over 28, 000 patients. In 2015, the company charged registered doctors monthly subscription fees totaling $495. The company makes money by getting a small portion of proceeds earned by lending companies like Prosper Healthcare and Care Credit every time a patient uses one of the companies to finance their procedures.

Doctors Breslow and Abramowitz together with Mr. Kera assembled a team in 2015 that successfully built the site and got it operational within six months. The doctors secured $3m in seed capital from friends and family. In 2016, they received a second round of $2m in financing. The site is expected to generate over $20m by 2020.
